Being “ready” for therapy is subjective and different for every person. Whether you’re someone who does a lot of research before moving forward or just dives in, here are a few things to think about to help you choose to start working with a therapist.
1. Mood and Behavior Changes
Everyone experiences moodiness from time to time. Emotions influence our mood and behaviors, which is normal. However, if you are experiencing mood swings or behaviors that are starting to disrupt your daily life, work performance, and/or your relationships, you’re not alone.
It’s common to have lots of emotions, especially in a world that can be overwhelming, or can feel like it’s challenging to settle or regulate your emotions. If you’re trying to manage it all on your own and are struggling, or if you are feeling curious about exploring other skills or supports you can use, it might be a good indication that you are ready for therapy.
Therapy is about more than talking about your emotions. Together, we are going to look at how they influence you, and we work to help you find and discover new tools that help support you beyond when you are in a therapy session.
2. Wanting Some Extra Help
Life can be challenging, and it can feel lonely when facing challenges. When you’re enduring hardships, navigating life transitions, or living with trauma, you might start wondering if it’s always going to feel this way.
Sometimes these situations can leave us feeling unsafe, even within ourselves, and it can be hard to cope with emotions and find stability in our lives. If you find yourself thinking about wanting extra help or being curious about support, or simply not wanting to do things alone, that’s a sure sign you’re ready for therapy.
3. Seeking Personal Growth
Therapy isn’t just for the hard or challenging aspects of life. If you’ve been wanting to explore your relationship with yourself or work on self-improvement goals, therapy can help!
Whether it’s getting to know yourself better, improving self-awareness, confidence, and self-reflection, or setting and meeting goals, there is a lot therapy can offer. If you’ve been working on self-exploration and want more, you are definitely ready to continue this meaningful work with a therapist.
One of the things that makes our therapy approach unique is that we are not only trauma-informed, but we also use a holistic approach. So if there are things from your past that are impacting your ability to go forward or reach certain goals, or aspects of your life that limit you in other areas, we are here to help you address what’s stopping you and help you in your personal growth.
4. Desiring Change or Feeling Stuck
If you’re feeling stuck or looking for change in your life, therapy can be a safe place to explore those feelings. Therapy can help you create meaningful changes by identifying your repeating patterns and helping you find ways to break those cycles.
If you’re yearning to improve feelings of stagnation, wanting to address a lack of motivation, or wanting help to find your purpose, you’re likely ready to engage in the process of therapy.
Even being angry about being where you are can be a sign that it’s time to talk with a therapist. When you can’t move forward on your own, someone who understands trauma, and how to uncover what’s underneath anger can help you find your way forward.
5. You’re Feeling Weighed Down or Trapped
If you’ve been living with years of unresolved trauma, you might start to notice how it can start to weigh you down and even create a trapped feeling in your body. Often, unresolved trauma can start to negatively impact your health, your relationships, and your daily functioning.
Whether it’s avoidance, isolation, living in a constant state of nervous system arousal, or navigating triggers, trauma can leave you feeling burnt out physically, mentally, and emotionally. Therapy can help by processing and integrating trauma, so it no longer holds you down and overtakes your life. If you’re tired of feeling weighed down by your baggage, we recommend talking with someone on our team so that you don’t have to do it alone anymore.
6. You’re Thinking About It
It sounds simple, but if you’re thinking about therapy and instead of feeling dread or defensiveness, you’re feeling curious about it, then that’s a good indication that you are ready to start doing the work!
Maybe you’re getting encouragement from others, or maybe you just happened to see this blog post, but if you’re exploring the thought of therapy with a willing and open mind, you’re probably ready. If you’re worried about finding the right therapist in Utah, we can help.
